Whether you’re looking for a new name because you’ve come out as non-binary, genderqueer, agender, or genderfluid — or you want to raise your baby outside gender stereotypes — we have a comprehensive list of non-binary names.
What is a Non-Binary Name?
A non-binary name is a name that is non-gender specific. It is a name that can be used regardless of the sex assigned at birth and does not serve as a gender marker.
Unlike gender-neutral names, non-binary names are androgynous. In other words, non-binary names do not have strong associations with either of the binary genders. This means non-binary names do not include names that started out as masculine or feminine and have since traversed the traditional gender line, for example, Charlie and Quinn. Except in rare instances (such as place names and last names), non-binary names do not include names that end in ‘son’ (meaning ‘son of’), such as Madison and Jackson. Similarly, non-binary names do not include names typically assumed to belong to males or females, such as Hunter or Bailey.
Why choose a Non-Binary Name?
More than ever, parents are willing to embrace the possibility of gender fluidity in their children. Picking a non-binary name is the surest way to future-proof a child’s name, no matter how they choose to identify in the future.
An ‘enby’ name may fit your personal philosophy about raising your child free of gendered identity, or you may think ‘nb’ names sound modern and cool. Popular non-binary names in the U.S. include River, Riley, Sawyer, Oakley, and Eden. Unique non-binary names include Justice, Ocean, Dallas, Reign, and Milan. These names are a great fit for folks of every gender, including genderqueer, agender and bigender people.
