Ancient times are considered to span from 3,000 BC to 500 AD, and while this expansive era may seem shrouded in mystery, what happened in ancient times affects our modern living in countless ways. Using an ancient last name can help reconnect people with humanity’s collective past, highlight their own history, and stand out from the crowd. On this page, you’ll find lists of ancient last names for every person or character.

What are Ancient Last Names?

Throughout the ancient world, last names held different meanings in different cultures. Last names were very often not passed down through the family, and instead changed to reflect the work, status, or parentage of an individual. Notably, last names that reflected nobility and tribal affiliation were some of the earliest to be recorded and passed down through generations. Patronymics, or last names that referred to one’s father, were the most common amongst everyday people of the ancient world, so they carried the associations and impressions held by the father’s first name. The nobility used last names that reflected their views of themselves: powerful, wise, blessed, and courageous names were popular in that class. Ancient last names are special in that they have a deeper meaning for the original people who used them.

We’ve collected lists of ancient last names from different civilizations, carefully curated to fit the different impressions, characteristics, and themes that you may need. Check out our comprehensive list of the most recognizable ancient last names and read through our different lists for more specific ancient last names.

Famous People with Ancient Last Names

Domingo Santos was born in Barcelona, Spain. The name Domingo Santos was actually his pseudonym: his name was Pedro Domingo Mutiñó. Much of his life’s work revolved around the art of writing. He worked as a translator and editor, but his legacy was made by his decades of writing fiction. He is known as the father of science fiction in Spain. His surname, Santos, was first used in Spain and Portugal. The family name Santos translates to ‘Saint’ and was often used in Christian communities.

Claude Demetrius was born in Bath, Maine. He was a prominent songwriter who wrote entire musicals, but his greatest claims to fame were the rock-and-roll songs that he created for singers like Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Demetrius is a Latin surname but was originally used in ancient Greece as the name Demetrios, and meant that the person was devoted to Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and mother of the goddess, Persephone.

Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Santiago was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He lived a humble life, caring little for his professional and financial advancement, and instead devoted much of his life to restoring historic liturgy practices within the Catholic church. He held two surnames in the Spanish practice: Rodríguez arrived in Spain with the Visigoth invaders in the 400s and was originally Hrodric, which means heroic. Santiago originated in Spain and is a variation of the name Santos, which means saint, an apt name for a man like Carlos.

Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin was born in Paris, and his work painting miniatures was the center of his life. He studied under prominent artists and became a renowned teacher for hundreds of fellow miniaturist painters. He would paint miniatures for the likes of several powerful political leaders, including Napoleon and Louis XVIII. His ancient last name Augustin comes from the Latin word augere, which translated means ‘to increase’, and the title Augustus which was given to Roman emperors and translates to ‘venerable’.

Hugh Falconer was born in Scotland and was a renowned botanist, geologist, and paleontologist. He spent many years in India working as a government advisor on botany and agricultural practices but turned towards the study of ancient skeletons over the years. He combined his findings with the work of Charles Darwin and helped contextualize the theory of evolution in the fossil record. The ancient last name Falconer is carried by members of a Scottish clan branch and originated from the Old French name Faulconnier, which is a surname for those who worked as falcon trainers.
