Names of Famous Greek Men and Women

Nikos Kazantzakis was a writer and translator whose works made him an icon in modern Greek literature. He studied at the University of Athens and the Sorbonne. He helped revive ancient Greek works as a translator, and as a writer, he was nominated for 9 Nobel Prizes in literature. The Greek name Nikos means ‘victory of the people.’

Georgios Papanikolaou was a pioneering pathologist whose study of cancerous cells led to the creation of the Papanicolaou, or Pap, smear test. Giannis Antetokounmpo was born in Athens in 1994 and has become one of the NBA’s most decorated players. Nicknamed “Greek Freak” by his fans, he has played for Filathlitikos and the Milwaukee Bucks. A biopic of Giannis titled Rise was released in 2022. Giannis is a Greek name of Hebrew origin meaning ‘God is gracious.’

Stelios Haji-Ioannou is an entrepreneur who used his start at his father’s successful shipping company to establish his own companies. He is a London School of Economics graduate and the founder of EasyJet, PlC. The name Stelios comes from a Greek word that means ‘pillar.’
