653 Masculine Girl Names & Tomboy Names

You are here: Home / Names / Baby Names / Girl Name Lists / 653 Masculine Girl Names & Tomboy Names

Giving your daughter a masculine or tomboy name will help convey that she is strong and capable. In this guide, you will find names that have traditionally been male names, to slightly masculine girl names that simply have an edge to them. There are many options to find a cool boyish name for your daughter.

Why Choose a Masculine Girl Name?

At their core, words have the meaning we give them, and names are no different. However, women’s names perceived as feminine and girly are frequently seen as weaker than masculine or boyish names. But gender stereotypes are being broken down every day. Masculine girl names are increasing in popularity.

Studies have found that having a masculine name gives women an edge, especially if they are in a field heavily dominated by men, such as law or engineering. For example, a study on masculine names for women found that female lawyers with more masculine names are more likely to become judges. Giving your daughter one of these masculine names will help provide her with a sense of confidence, and perhaps even a slight advantage over the competition in the workplace.

Famous Celebrity Girls with Masculine Names

Celebrities that have given their girls traditional male names include Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, who named their daughter Wyatt. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds also gave their daughter a ‘boy name for a girl,’ James.

Melissa Etheridge gave her daughter a gender-fluid name. Bailey has been popular among both boys and girls and maintains a strong, masculine sound while still being cute and playful.

Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and her husband David Beckham gave their daughter a name that has only recently flipped gender associations. Harper is a name that was once solely for boys, and it maintains its strong, masculine sound even as it has climbed in popularity as a name for girls.

The Orange Is the New Black star and writer Samira Wiley chose the ‘traditional’ boy name of George for her baby girl. Wiley explained the reasoning behind the name, saying, “I just really like the name, I just think it’s really cute.. I tried to do some research, I found out in the 1800s it was a girl’s name”. And it’s true. Many names that are considered ‘gendered’ weren’t always so. These names are switching once again and becoming unisex names. Kudos to Wiley.
