Top 1,000 Hungarian Names

You are here: Home / Names / Names by Nationality / Top 1,000 Hungarian Names

Hungarian names are closely tied to the religious and political history of the country. Names would often reflect issues and accomplishments of their era and prominent saints of a region. Hungarian names are a significant part of this fascinating culture. On this page, you’ll find our carefully researched lists of popular Hungarian baby names and common Hungarian names with meanings.

Hungarian Names and Meanings

Hungarian names are typically given with the family name first, and to fit our English name practices, the order is often switched. Therefore, typically, one would introduce their last name first in Hungarian-speaking regions and their given name last. Common characteristics can be found in Hungarian first names: religious saints and themes have been popular over the centuries, and references to lauded personality traits are common. Parents in Hungary must choose a name from a large, preapproved list or otherwise request official approval for a name.

Hungarian is a language that originates in the Urals. Over the millennia, it has been influenced by Latin and Greek, the languages of the Catholic Church, and central Germanic languages. Common Hungarian names like András, a Hungarian name meaning ‘warrior,’ and Erzsébet, from a Greek name meaning ‘God is my oath,’ reflect these centuries of cultural exchange. Read on to find our lists of common Hungarian names by theme and our list of the most popular Hungarian baby names.
