What are Western Last Names?

Western last names are striking for their cultural significance. The proliferation of the Western genre has made its way into the American body of myth. These names are synonymous with the spirit of the American West itself: free, independent, hardworking, and always with the smell of danger in the air. These names almost have a mythological quality to them, evoking any number of impressions ranging from strong and confident, to rebellious and risky, to youthful and adventurous. Genealogy indicates that most ‘Western’ last names are Western European in origin, and typically denote a family’s occupation or social status. Famous People with Western Last Names

Jim Courtright, also known as ‘Longhair Jim,’ was a Texas sheriff and gunfighter, best known for his gun duel with Luke Short that claimed his life. The surname Courtright originates from Britain but traceable to earlier Anglo-Saxon tribes. Like many such last names, it denotes a profession; in this case, it refers to the crafters of carts and wheels.

Charles Orbie “Slim” Whitaker was an American silent film actor that later transitioned to talkies, best known for his extensive work in early Western films. The name ‘Whitaker,’ is Anglo-Saxon in origin. The family name Whitaker translates to ‘white acre’ or ‘white field,’ though some interpretations translate it as ‘wheat acre’ or ‘wheat field,’ also denoting an occupation (farming) for those possessing the name.

Harry Longabaugh, also known as the infamous ‘Sundance Kid,’ was a member of the outlaw gang Butch Cassidy’s Wild Ones, whose exploits were immortalized in the 1969 film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. ‘Longabaugh’ is a relatively uncommon last name. Longabaugh is of German origin, and quite literally means ‘Long Baugh’ or ‘Long Branch,’ however it can also mean ‘Long Stream.’ ‘Longabaugh’ likely has noble origins.

Pat Garrett is best known for killing Billy the Kid. Garrett was a New Mexico lawman, buffalo hunter, bartender, ranger, customs agent, and later in his life, businessman. The surname Garrett is Germanic in origin, and appears throughout Britain, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and France. It’s a patronymic name that derives itself from the given name ‘Gerald,’ indicating the name of an ancestor.

Bartholemew ‘Bat’ Masterson was an all-around adventurer throughout the American West. He worked at times as a buffalo hunter, army scout, journalist, lawman, gambler, and prizefighter. Masterson is an anglicized version of the older Gaelic-Irish name ‘Mac an Mhaighistir.’ This translate to ‘son of the master,’ and the last name was likely used to denote a person’s social status.
