You are here: Home / Names / Names by Nationality / Top 882 Swiss Names

Switzerland is known for its majestic mountains, staunch neutrality, and a food culture celebrating chocolate. A Swiss name is a great way to connect with this culture and reflect the linguistic diversity of Switzerland. On this page are hand-picked lists of common Swiss names and meanings and a list of popular baby names in Switzerland.

Swiss Names and Meanings

Swiss names provide a glimpse into the multicultural nation of Switzerland and the historical influences of this nation known for staunchly maintaining its peace regardless of turmoil around it. A few common themes are found in Swiss names, including religious themes and both Christian and pagan, along with idealized traits such as power, courage, and beauty. With a Swiss name, one can give the impression that they are cosmopolitan, a nature enthusiast, and resolute. Of the many great qualities of Swiss names, the very best is their balance of classical conventions and modern tastes that make these names timeless.

Switzerland has four official languages: Romansh, Italian, French, and German (Swiss German and Standard German), with German being the most spoken language, followed by French. Romasch, Italian, and French share Latin origins, which helps make Latin-based names quite popular in Switzerland. Along with these linguistic influences, Swiss laws significantly impact names used in the country. Names cannot harm a child’s well-being, which bars names with puns, and names of cities, popular brands, and new names are banned from use on infants. We searched through Switzerland’s cities and villages to curate our lists of Swiss names by popularity and according to theme.
